Paintings from a Place called Mathilda

Paintings from a place called Mathilda (2010-ongoing) oil on canvas, linen, board, paper, or wood

Paintings from a Place Called Mathilda are plein air paintings of an internal landscape as real to Schwartz as New York or Paris. First brought there in 2012 by a raucous group of personae on a road trip, she found herself crammed in the back seat, sketching the passing scenery. Each painting is a composite of these views—layered, textured, and shaped by the accumulation of experiences, much like a life lived.

Mathilda exists as an actual place within Schwartz, a township with no set destination or timeline. Some paintings come together quickly, while others unfold over years, each guiding its own process. The interplay of loose, expressive brushstrokes with precise geometric lines reflects both the spontaneity and structure inherent in traveling through this deeply familiar terrain.
